NHMRC Research Excellence Awards success

Last night, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) celebrated outstanding research and researchers at its annual Research Excellence Awards.

Professor Karen Canfell, inaugural Director of The Daffodil Centre, was awarded the 2020 NHMRC Elizabeth Blackburn Investigator Grant Award (Leadership in Health Services Research) – one of the 11 highly competitive awards announced on the night.

Karen was recognised for being the highest ranked female applicant in the Leadership category for Health Services Research for her 2020 NHMRC Investigator Grant: Realising the World Health Organization targets for elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem: Effective implementation and scale-up of HPV vaccination and cervical screening in Australia, regionally, and globally.

The research of Karen and the Cervical Cancer and HPV Stream played a significant role in the development of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) strategy for Accelerating the Elimination of Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem. The strategy is designed to advance women’s health, strengthen worldwide health systems and address inequities between and within countries, placing countries on the road to eliminating cervical cancer.
