Tackling Tobacco Training
The Tackling Tobacco training package is designed to upskill you, your staff and/or your volunteers in delivering smoking cessation support at your organisation.
There are two components to the Tackling Tobacco training package. It is recommended that both parts are completed, however the eLearning can be completed in isolation if this better suits the needs of your organisation.

Tackling Tobacco eLearning
Our eLearning course will give you and your staff/volunteers the skills and knowledge needed to support someone to take their first steps to quit smoking and improve their health and wellbeing.
The eLearning course is made up of three interactive and engaging modules. The course will take around one hour to complete.
By completing this module, you will be able to:
- Recognise the burden of disease from tobacco use in Australia, with particular reference to priority populations.
- Identify and describe at common diseases caused by tobacco use.
- Explain the harmful effects associated with second-hand smoke exposure and strategies to reduce risks.
- Identify risks and harms associated with e-cigarette/vape use and dual use (e-cigarettes/vapes plus tobacco).
By completing this module, you will be able to:
- Explain how someone becomes dependent on nicotine.
- Describe the stages of nicotine dependency.
- Recognise common environmental, cultural, social and psychological barriers to quitting.
- Identify the different types of licensed pharmacotherapies and effectiveness with supporting cessation.
Participants completing this module will be able to:
- Identify and describe the key components, application and efficacy of the Ask, Advise Help evidence-based brief advice model for managing nicotine dependence and supporting cessation.
- Identify and describe quit smoking referral pathways, including NSW Quitline, GPs and targeted services for priority population groups.
Tackling Tobacco online* facilitated training session
Our two-hour facilitated training session builds on the knowledge and skills acquired through completion of the eLearning course.
Delivered by knowledgeable smoking cessation experts, the session is designed to increase your confidence in offering smoking cessation brief advice to the people you support.
A certificate of completion will be issued for this training session.
It is highly recommended that the eLearning course is completed prior to attending a facilitated session.
By attending our facilitated training session, you will:
- Learn effective techniques to engage individuals in conversations about smoking cessation.
- Understand how to tailor the Ask, Advise, Help brief advice model to meet the needs of people receiving support.
- Feel confident in the delivery of brief advice to the people they support using the AAH model.
- Be able to identify strategies to overcome potential barriers when offering brief advice.
*The session will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. As the session contains interactive discussions and activities, it is recommended that participants each have access to an internet-connected laptop and headset/headphones, however adjustments can be made if this is not possible.
