How Healthy Lunch Box helped a mum teach her kids about healthy eating
By Cancer Council NSW
Keeping three kids from eating junk food can be a challenge. For Louise Sutherland, the Healthy Lunch Box website was a perfect way to educate her children about healthy meals and create good food habits.
I have three kids – a 13-year-old daughter, Grace, a 10-year-old son, Will and a three-year-old daughter, Evie.
The kids have always eaten well, but they’re kids – they sometimes want unhealthy snacks and they pick up on what other kids are eating at school.
Grace was pointed toward Cancer Council’s Healthy Lunch Box website for a school assignment. She really took on the advice from the website. She and Will both started looking at the website and they got a lot out of it. I was really impressed!
Grace and Will both used the website independently — they engaged with it a lot more than if it was me telling them to do it! It was visual, which was great — they weren’t reading a whole lot of information.
Will doesn’t eat a lot of vegetables. After looking through the Healthy Lunch Box website, he started looking at the way he could incorporate vegies. It became a game to see what they could include in their lunch boxes.
Having her interest sparked in food and nutrition has also made it easier to get Grace into cooking. It would be great if everyone was aware of the Healthy Lunch Box website.
