Over $5.3m awarded to world-class researchers across Australia 

Cancer Council NSW is excited to announce over $5.3 million in funding for new cancer research projects. Thanks to support from the community, we are thrilled to award funding to 12 world-class cancer researchers across Australia.  

These eminent and emerging cancer researchers are leading the charge towards a cancer free future by investigating new treatments and solutions to common treatment challenges like relapse. The projects span a range of cancers, including common cancers like breast and prostate, and rarer cancers such as pancreatic and childhood brain cancer. 

Funding is awarded through an independent process with projects assessed on their scientific merit and potential impact for the community. 

• Using artificial intelligence to enhance radiotherapy, Professor William S. Price, Western Sydney University 

• Switching off a gene in aggressive breast cancers, Dr Pilar Blancafort, The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research & The University of Western Australia 
• Monitoring for early signs of treatment resistance in breast cancer, Associate Professor Yuling Wang, Macquarie University 
• Understanding how some cancers evade immunotherapy, Associate Professor Alexander Swarbrick, The Garvan Institute of Medical Research 
• Testing a new dual treatment for aggressive childhood brain cancers, Professor David Ziegler, Children’s Cancer Institute 
• Redesigning testing for high-risk childhood leukaemia, Professor Richard Lock, Children’s Cancer Institute 
• Targeting cancer stem cells as a new line of treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia, Dr Jenny Y. Wang, The University of Sydney 
• Blocking the spread of triple negative breast cancer, Associate Professor David Croucher, The Garvan Institute of Medical Research 
• Extending treatment success in pancreatic and bowel cancers, Associate Professor Michael Griffin, University of Melbourne 
• Investigating ways to prevent aggressive childhood cancers, Dr Belamy Cheung, Children’s Cancer Institute 
• Towards more personalised prostate cancer treatment, Professor Lisa Butler, The University of Adelaide 
• Identifying the cause of bowel cancer in younger people, Associate Professor Daniel Buchanan, University of Melbourne
