Cancer Council NSW is lucky to be the organisation of choice for thousands of volunteers. We know there are many charities out there – in NSW alone there are more than 200 cancer charities.
But what makes Cancer Council NSW special, is that we are 97% community funded, working with and for the community to beat cancer. We are also the only cancer charity to work across all types of cancer. And these are just a few of the reasons why we have thousands of people willing to volunteer with us every year.
Volunteering, by definition, is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain. Last year alone, our volunteers contributed more than 400,000 hours in roles that ranged from transporting cancer patients to treatment, delivering our prevention programs to local communities, advocating to state government on cancer issues, providing administration and office support – and much more. But our volunteers give so much more to Cancer Council NSW than just their time.
Our almost 30,000 regular and occasional volunteers bring with them valuable life experiences, skills, diverse perspectives and a passion to beat cancer that we simply can’t quantify in hours or dollars.
People volunteer with us for their own unique reasons – it may be because of a connection to our mission and our work, for the friendships and networks they form with other volunteers and staff, or to gain life skills and experience that they can carry on into their future careers.
Whatever the reason is, as an organisation we are committed to ensuring that each and every one of our volunteers has a positive and engaging experience at Cancer Council NSW.
It doesn’t matter if they stay for a few days, a few months or a few years – the time they spend with us should be rewarding and enjoyable.
However, to give volunteers a valuable experience, we need to hear from you – your ideas, opinions and feedback on how we can continue to do better. So let’s get talking.
If you are already a volunteer, or looking to get involved, this blog is just one of many ways that we will connect with you to share your volunteer achievements and listen to your feedback.
Wherever you are, whatever your volunteer role, we want to hear from you.
