What would you do if your surf club was affected by cancer?

After cancer touched the tightknit community at Newport Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), Shiralee Hamm (the club’s Marketing and Events Coordinator) got in touch with Cancer Council to see what they could do to give back.

“Newport SLSC is more than just a surf club, it’s a family. And as a family we have sadly been affected by cancer in so many ways, especially in the past 12 months. We’re proud to support Cancer Council because we know firsthand how they help people and their loved ones affected by cancer. We want to be a part of this amazing cause and contribute to their vision for a cancer free future,” said Shiralee.

Newport SLSC team will be volunteering for Cancer Council throughout the year and hosting Cancer Council cancer prevention talks to educate the community on how to reduce their cancer risk. The club will also be hosting a fundraising ball called ‘Beyond the Beach’ on 27 April at the Park House in Mona Vale to raise vital funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention, advocacy and support services.

Olly Woolrych, Community Relations Coordinator at Cancer Council’s Metro Sydney office, said that he hopes their activity will inspire future support from other organisations across the state.

“I think it’s fantastic how Newport SLSC is dedicated to not only producing great young athletes but well-rounded people too, mentoring them about life beyond the beach. We’re excited to provide these young adults with the opportunity to learn and understand the true value of community through fundraising, cancer education sessions and volunteering opportunities.

“It’s a great example of how community-based organisations can connect with Cancer Council to raise funds and awareness for our cancer support services,” said Olly.
